It’s Not Just a Garage Door: The Indoor-Outdoor Living Trend

One of the biggest trends we are seeing in Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia is the use of glass garage doors inside the home. Architects are increasingly replacing rear patio walls with glass garage doors.

The "California" Room

Open the door in the spring and fall to seamlessly merge your living room or kitchen with your patio.

Pool Houses:

Use a glass door to create an open-air bar or cabana.

Basements:

Walk-out basements are being transformed with glass doors that open to the backyard. Williamson Best can install these doors anywhere, not just in the garage.

Glass Options: Balancing Privacy, Light, and Security

Many homeowners ask: “I want the look, but I don’t want neighbors seeing my messy garage.” We offer dozens of glass customizations to control visibility.

Clear Glass

Effect: Maximum visibility and light.

Best For: Showcasing a classic car collection or an organized, high-end garage space.

Frosted / Satin Etch (Most Popular)

Effect: Allows 80% of the light in, but blurs the view completely. You can see shapes and shadows, but no details.

Best For: Privacy without sacrificing brightness.

Tinted (Gray, Bronze, or Mirrored)

Effect: Acts like sunglasses for your house. Reduces heat gain and glare. Mirrored glass offers one-way privacy during the day.

Best For: South-facing homes that get direct sun.

Frame Finishes: The Rise of Black Anodized Aluminum

The frame is just as important as the glass. The aluminum construction is naturally rust-proof, making it ideal for the humid DMV climate.

Black Anodized:

The #1 trend. A matte black frame creates a striking contrast against white siding or brick.

Clear Aluminum (Silver)

The classic industrial look.

Bronze / Dark Bronze:

Pairs beautifully with earth-tone homes and stone facades.

Powder Coated Colors:

We can custom paint the frame to match any Sherwin-Williams color code to blend with your window trim.

"Will My Garage Freeze?" – The Truth About Glass Insulation

Glass is not inherently a great insulator, but technology has advanced. If you have a heated garage, you do not have to sacrifice efficiency for style. The Solution: Insulated Glass Units (IGU) We can install doors with Double-Pane Insulated Glass. Just like the windows in your house, two panes of glass are sealed with an air pocket in between.

Frame Insulation: We also offer frames with a “Thermal Break” and polyurethane insulation inside the aluminum rails to stop cold transfer.

The Result: You get a modern look with R-values that rival those of standard steel doors

Durability: Why Tempered Safety Glass is Stronger Than Wood

A common fear is breakage. “What if my kid hits it with a basketball?” All garage doors installed by Williamson Best use tempered safety glass.

Strength: Tempered glass is heat-treated to be 4-5 times stronger than standard annealed glass. It can withstand significant impact.

Safety: In the rare event that it does break, it shatters into thousands of small, dull pebbles (like a car window) rather than dangerous jagged shards.

Aluminum Frame: The heavy-duty, 2-inch-thick aluminum frame is rigid and virtually maintenance-free. It will never rot, warp, or crack like wood.

Our Design Process: From Concept to Installation

Site Survey:

We measure your opening and check the "header" depth. Glass doors are heavier than they look; we ensure your framing can support the weight..

Visualization:

We use design software to show you exactly what a Black vs. Silver frame would look like on your specific house.

Custom Ordering:

Every glass door is built to order. Production typically takes 3-5 weeks.

Expert Installation:

We install the door with commercial-grade hardware and specialized springs calculated for the glass weight. We ensure the panels align perfectly to achieve a seamless "glass wall" effect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Glass Doors

Are glass garage doors safe?

Yes. We use Tempered Safety Glass, which is the same glass used in sliding patio doors and car windows. It is extremely impact-resistant and safe for families.

Glass doors are a premium product. Prices typically range from $4,500 to $8,000+, depending on the size, glass type (insulated vs. single pane), and frame finish

With clear glass, yes. With frosted or tinted glass, they can see lights and shadows, but not specific details. If total privacy is a concern, we recommend Frosted or Satin Etch glass.

They work with standard openers, but because they can be heavy, we recommend a 3/4 HP Belt-Drive Opener (such as the LiftMaster 87504) for smooth, quiet operation.

Yes. You must request “Insulated Glass Units” (Double Pane). This significantly improves energy efficiency and reduces noise transmission.
