The DIY Balance Test: How to Check Your Door in 3 Steps
You don’t need tools to diagnose this. You just need to disconnect the motor. Note: Do not perform this test if you see a broken spring or dangling cable.
Close the Door:
Ensure the garage door is fully closed.
Disconnect the Opener:
Pull the red emergency release cord hanging from the trolley. You should hear a "click" as the door disconnects from the chain/belt.
The Lift Test:
Manually lift the door to the halfway point (about waist height) and let go.
Interpreting the Results: Falling, Flying, or Floating?
Watch what the door does when you let go.
Result A: The Door "Floats" (PASS)
If the door stays in place (or moves very slowly), your system is perfectly balanced. Your springs are doing their job.
Result B: The Door Slams Shut (FAIL - Under-Tensioned)
If the door drops heavily to the floor, your springs are weak or under-tensioned. Your opener is working too hard. This requires immediate adjustment.

Why You Should NEVER Adjust Torsion Springs Yourself
You can fix a roller. You can fix a sensor. You should never touch the springs. Torsion springs are under enough tension to lift 400 lbs. To adjust them, you must insert a steel bar into the winding cone and loosen the screws.

The "Bowed" Top Panel: A Visual Warning Sign
You might not feel the door’s weight, but you can see the damage it causes. Look at the top section of your garage door where the opener arm connects. Is the metal bending, cracking, or bowing in the center? This is the hallmark of an unbalanced door. When the springs are weak, the electric opener has to use excessive force to push the door down and pull it up. Because the door is too heavy, the opener arm starts to tear through the thin steel of the top panel.
The Fix: If we catch this early, we can balance the springs and install a Strut Brace to reinforce the panel. If left unaddressed, the opener will eventually pull the bracket out of the door, requiring a full panel replacement.
Extension Springs vs. Torsion Springs: We Balance Both Systems
Not all garage doors have the spring bar above the header (Torsion). Many older homes in Arlington and Silver Spring use Extension Springs (the springs that stretch along the horizontal tracks on the sides). Balancing these requires a completely different technique.
